A Reflection Paper on the 3rd Meeting of the
EDAD 207 Class of Dr. Olga Alonsabe
I have read from a book entitled Exploring Teaching by Arends, Winitzky, and Tannenbaum which contains an article that made a discussion about “Who should control The Curriculum”. It supported that while it is true that a national curriculum is necessary in laying exactly what specific subject matter is to be covered in each year of schooling, a curriculum should be developed based on the needs and interest of the learners at the local school level. Such curriculum is flexible, and is more adaptable in the ever-changing modern world. Furthermore, there should be national standards which refer to the levels of knowledge in the schooling experience. Accordingly, there are two influences that control the curriculum which are: national influences (political forces, social critics, publishing companies, congress) and local influences (principals, teachers, parents and students).
In line to this, there is a necessity for the full and truthful implementation of the curriculum. Full implementation means that all competencies prescribed in the curriculum are taught to the learners and that they are able to master the skills needed for their survival in this competitive world. Truthful implementation connotes to the teacher’s dedication in teaching the competencies for the learners. As such, the 75% mastery level target of the Department of Education can only be met if the curriculum is properly put into action for by the front liners – teachers in the field – under the headship of their administrator. The parents are also involved in this process because education begins at home, as well as, the entire community itself as it greatly affects the total development of a child.
If I will be given a chance to work in the central office, I will work hard for the implementation of the curriculum which is more practical and apt to the needs of the modern day learners. I will also campaign for the empowerment of the local administrators to strictly and closely monitor the performance of the teachers in their schools. Quality instruction should be observed and high mastery level should be met. I will gather outputs on how the teachers indigenize their lessons so as to uphold the principle of diversity in learning and cultural differences. I will also encourage the implementation of co – curricular activities in the public schools to further enhance the multiple intelligences of the Filipino learners.
